Driven Women

Sleepless in Colorado

Dear GG,
I’ve been on the road for about eight months, and I can’t keep my eyes open for more than three hours at a time. I’ve asked other drivers how they do it, but I don’t want to take pills, and too much coffee makes me sick. I run about 1,500 miles a week, and I’d like to do more, but I just can’t seem to get into a groove or stay awake. I’ve been late many times, but at least I get loads where they need to go in one piece and the truck is undamaged.
Jessi’s Dream
Sleepless in Colorado

Hi Jessi,
As long as the company you’re driving for is OK with your performance, don’t worry about your miles. I would, however, be concerned about delivering loads beyond the due date/time, especially if you were given plenty of time. Have you checked to make sure that you don’t have a medical issue like a sleeping disorder?
Not everyone is cut out for driving OTR. But if your heart’s set on driving, consider these suggestions:
1.   Team with someone for a week or two to get some good habits.
2.   Drive regionally and get home more often.
3.   Drive locally, on a dedicated route, and get home every night.
4.   Work in the division where your CDL will come in handy, but you won’t be on the road (safety or dispatch, for example).
Jessi, if you’re tired, stop and rest. There’s no shame in saving your life, or someone else’s, by pulling over and getting some sleep.
     Cheers,

     GG
