Say What?
Question: What do you like the most and the least about your job?
Ralph Howard, 55, La Plata, MO
Professional driving experience: 30 years
“I like to drive, so that’s obviously a good thing. Of course, being out on the road gets old after awhile, even for someone like myself who likes to drive. So far, it’s been OK. What do I like the least? The last five miles. It’s always an adventure trying to find the customer. I’m hoping to get one of those GPS mapping systems to help solve some of those problems.”
William Condron, 59, Rochester Mills, PA
Professional driving experience: 5 years
“I think the best part of this job is the independence. The worst part is the high cost of being out on the road and all of the expenses associated with it. You’re gone three or four weeks at a time. There’s never enough home time. By the time you start enjoying yourself, it’s time to get back at it.”
Bernice Condron, 57, Rochester Mills, PA
Professional driving experience: 5 years
“The best part is traveling around with my husband and seeing all the things this country has to offer. The worst part is not getting to shower often enough, but I’m sticking with it. We just bought another truck. It would be nice if they had cleaner truck stops.”
David Beckman, 43, Phoenix, AZ
Professional driving experience: 17 years
“The best part of the job is meeting all the people out on the road. The worst part is all of these rules they throw at us. The federal government is constantly changing the hours-of-service. Each state seems to have its own rules. You can do this in one state, you cross the state line, and you better not do the same thing in the next state. The rules should be the same.”
Linda Beckman, 49, Phoenix, AZ
Professional driving experience: 9 years
“I like spending time with my husband, so that’s nice. I like spending time on the road, but for the first five years, I hated it. I just wasn’t much of a traveler. It’s much more fun now. I can’t think of anything I don’t like about it, except maybe they could make our job a little easier. Is that asking too much?”
